Most of us have heard of chip wars or shortages of some microprocessor chips but have you heard of HGV remapping for better fuel economy without tuning or chips?

Pistons and their rings are among the most important parts of a diesel engine. Upgrading them with the Opti Combustion process is a superior mechanical solution to drive lower emissions and higher fuel efficiency from leaner burn.

It can be hard to see the wood from the trees with so many decarbonising ideas, hydrogen, cloud data collection, and very complex exhaust after treatment processes (in case you have not realised all these things can go wrong).

At Opti we process the existing engine pistons in your heavy goods vehicle truck or bus by fitting gapless piston rings and adding ceramic thermal coating plus dry lubricant; this results in dramatically less blowby, lower exhaust temperature and opacity and PM emissions.

This means the problems associated with diesel engines like NOx and PM or unburned HC emissions are improved at source and the plethora of EGR, DOC, SCR and DPF items do not have so much work to do.

Best of all, there is real fuel efficiency and cost savings with 15 to 25% more fuel economy being common and that is a real deal maker with fuel being an overhead of around 30% of all haulage costs according to the Road Haulage Association.

The results of these modifications to increase mpg are as follows:

  • Better fuel economy to the tune of 15-20% as power is kept above the piston crown where it does the best.
  • Double the life of lubricating oil; used engine oil from a diesel engine is usually black, this is soot from fuel burn blowby with normal piston rings.
  • Higher horsepower and torque at lower revs-per-minute with the turbocharger starting up earlier in the rev band.
  • Substantially lower PM, HC, and NOx emissions resulting in less AdBlue usage, less carbon into the EGR system and less DPF regenerations needed.
  • Quieter and smoother running with a new sustainable life for an old engine.
  • Around 80 degrees C lower exhaust temperatures, ideal for military applications with lower smoke and exhaust opacity.
